A sofa bed converts into a proper bed elevated off the floor — typically with a mattress, frame, headboard and is a combination of both a proper sofa and a proper bed. A futon is a mattress that folds into a seat shape, then folds out flat onto the floor when used as a bed to give you a traditional futon style.
The Citta is a true sofa bed: the bed sits 40cm off the floor at standard bed height, with a separate headboard and a 12cm thick three-layer mattress. Cheaper “sofa beds” are often just futons in disguise — just a mattress, cut in half or in thirds with a cover over it, and just have the mattress flat on the floor for a bed or folded up into a seat shape.
